What I Learned Today: Valentine's Day Edition

Feb 14, 2011

In the spirit of Valentine's Day, I thought I would share some of my notes from teachings about love.

In Luke, Chapter 10, Jesus tells a religious expert who is trying to provoke him that the two most important commandments are:
  • "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind."
  • "Love your neighbor as yourself."
When we are loving one another, we are being most spiritual because God is LOVE (1 John 4:8). "God love" or "Agape" is a sacrificial love not based on whether someone deserves it or not. It's love for the unlovable. It's an interest and concern for all people, simply because they are people.

So, seeing as though Valentine's Day is a celebration of love, try not to get caught up in the superficial hype of the holiday itself (chocolates, roses and whether or not you have a Valentine) and just try loving everyone equally as you love yourself! Peace!
